It was a monumental evening in Hollywood for African American actresses!
Viola Davis made history September 20th at the Emmy Awards, winning the award for best actress in a drama for “How To Get Away With Murder.”
Sunday night’s Emmy Award given to Davis marks the first time the best actress award has gone to an African-American woman in that category.
The most moving thing about Davis winning the award, is fellow African American actresses, Taraji P. Henson and Kerry Washington showing emotional and supportive support for Viola winning the award.
Before Davis went to receive the award, Viola hugged Taraji, who was also nominated under the same category.
Television critique for The New Yorker, Emily Nussbaum took to twitter to address the award being given to Viola, stating,
“For those in my mentions: Davis’ quote: When “Scandal” debuted in ’12, there hadn’t been a single drama starring a black woman since ’74.”
All I have to say is, black girls rock!
